What Happened After the Civil War? -- Reconstruction Timeline
Kinda wacky, kinda odd, but we created little models of plant and animal cells and combined them into a mobile. We learned a lot by making the models, and we talked a lot about the best ways to study something like cells. We focused on the different organelles and their functions, the evolution of cell theory, how the world of biology research has changed over time, and the differences between animal and plant cells. During this project, UH-Hilo students came to visit and made their own cells, too. That inspired them to come back and host lessons using nifty microscopes and cell ID techniques. Very cool! The students also took a classic "here's what will be on the test, study, study, study, now you have a grade" test. Overall, this project folded textbook learning into fun activities and a metacognitive exercise.
